During Q1 2019, maritime cargo throughput at Antwerp fell by 3%, bringing the situation “back to normal” following the record figures of Q1 2018, but container traffic continued to grow, with March being the strongest month ever.

Container traffic continues to grow, with March 2019 as the strongest month ever in terms of containers. It beat the previous record, set in March last year.

Antwerp says its container market share in the Hamburg-Le Havre range increased in tonnage terms to 27.5% in 2018. Net growth in units amounted to 650,000 TEU.

Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port Authority, said: “Our container throughput continues to grow despite the weakened economic outlook. This is good news for Port of Antwerp and consolidates our excellent position as a container cargo hub in the global logistics chain.”
