Nationwide Strike – Nigeria 3rd June 2024

04 Jun Nationwide Strike – Nigeria 3rd June 2024

We would like to thank our member Kingfisher Freight Services cc from the South Africa for sending this information.

As of Monday 3rd June 2024 all major Unions in Nigeria have implemented a Nationwide strike, over stalled negotiations concerning a new “National Minimum Wage.”

The strike was advised late pm on Friday but after several threats and suspensions concerning earlier advisories, this one has been implemented.

With regards to MSC (and all shipping activity in the country) the following impacts are faced:

  • Total stoppage of all vessel operations.
  • Total stoppage of all terminal operations – no gate in / out of import or export containers until further notice.
  • MSC staff affiliated with Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria as well as the Senior Staff Association of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies, are obliged to stay at home. Hence there is currently no delivery order or other counter service. The office is closed to the public until further notice.
  • Management and staff are working from home where possible.

We expect this situation to last some days, also potentially impacting international flight arrivals and departures. Currently all domestic aviation is grounded and info we have is that international flights will be suspended from midnight tonight, if there is no change.
